Who's Lee?

  • Lee Smith is co-founder of Gatehouse, a London-based consultancy specialising in employee communication, engagement and change. He is a visiting lecturer at a number of UK universities, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) and former chair of CIPR Inside, the Institute's specialist group for internal communicators.

Thanks for the comment.

I'm glad you picked up on the point that careers in IC don't have to be at the 'strategic advisor' level to be important. There are too many people pretending that the only valid role in IC is to operate as some sort of mystic advisor.

Real people told us that you have to concentrate on the soft skills - but even the newest entrant to the profession has to use these attributes. I hope our model explains why

The minute we start pretending that the only aspiration is to achieve a Rasputin-like status is the moment our colleagues start asking "exactly what is it that you do to deliver around here?"

..which is a point I think you've made a few times on this blog isn't it?

Absolutely right Liam! No matter how far you get in this game, I think you should always have/want to roll up your sleeves and do sharp end tactical stuff. Anyone who thinks they can be a 'pure' IC strategist is kidding themselves.
